Josée-Anne Riverin has a passion for human rights and will soon obtain her bachelor’s degree in international relations and international law. She is of course motivated by a keen interest, yet first and foremost by her passion. Following two trips, one to South Africa and one to Mauritania, which were spent in underprivileged communities, she reached the conclusion that adopting a « laisser-faire » attitude is somewhat like being party to the situation. From that moment on, her future was mapped out: she would be, both at the regional and international levels, a person who brings about change. In 2005, she headed for Cambodia and returned with a documentary on the issue of land concessions in a country marked by conflicts and political instability, as well as on the management of the international aid it receives. Presented at colleges and universities and even during a conference chaired by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for human rights in Cambodia, her film proved that we all have a role to play in ensuring the respect of human rights. And Josée-Anne’s mission doesn’t stop there: she works with the Clinique internationale de défense des droits humains (CIDDHU) at UQAM for which she is helping to write a summary report on Native issues.
