BoatTail Dragfoiler

Business and economy

BoatTail Dragfoiler
When Mathieu Boivin and Karik Roberge, recent mechanical engineering graduates of the École Polytechnique de Montréal, decided to explore the aerodynamics of road tractors used to haul semi-trailers, they were completely unaware of the interest their work would generate. By developing a rear dragfoiler known as a BoatTail that is installed on a semi-trailer, they drew the attention of the entire North American road carrier industry, and with good reason. In addition to decreasing the overall drag of a semi-trailer and associated turbulence, the BoatTail also engendered fuel savings of 5 to 7 % annually, or $1,500 to $3,000.
