FINALISTCOMMITTED STAFF MEMBER AVENIR
Marc-André Labelle

A sports and recreation technician committed to fostering academic success through sport

When he started working at Mont-Bleu high school 12 years ago, Marc-André Labelle set himself the goal of giving as many students as possible the opportunity to join a sports team. This is because he believes that students who are happy and proud to practice a sport will remain in school and succeed in their studies. Over the years, the sports and recreation technician has managed to increase the number of sports teams from 9 to 27, with a total of almost 400 student members every year. These teams, which go by the name of the Panthères, have been so successful at the regional level that a mini-Panthères program is beginning to take shape at elementary schools. And because Marc-André would never dream of letting a lack of finances prevent students from representing their school at competitions, he is always ready and willing to coordinate a fund-raising campaign or appeal to his contacts to secure sponsorships and grants.

Éric Labonté

A lab technician committed to leaving the environment in a better state

At a high school such as the one in Grande-Rivière, which has 1,850 students and staff members, there are a lot of people who need to be made more aware of environmental issues. And this is exactly the task that lab technician Éric Labonté, who goes by the nickname Mr. Environment, is dedicated to fulfilling and he does so with optimism and conviction. Every day at lunchtime, he goes from one table to the next making sure that proper recycling practices are being respected. But this is just one of his ways of helping because he also never hesitates to sort through waste to ensure that no recyclable materials find their way to the landfill. Moreover, thanks to his endeavours, the school now has a composting system, its recycling bins have been replaced and there are more of them, unwanted school supplies are recovered and redistributed to the needy and students now benefit from organized visits to recycling plants.

Isabelle Girard

A teacher committed to establishing the winning conditions for enabling students to become more open to the world

When a school is located far from the large urban centres, there are often fewer opportunities to come into contact with new cultures and become more open to the world. This is why Isabelle Girard decided to address this shortfall by setting up projects at Providence/J.M.-Robert high school that enable students to gain a different perspective of their immediate surroundings while learning more about themselves. In addition to overseeing various music projects, including the school Christmas concert and year-end gala, and collaborating on local fundraising events, Isabelle set up the Club des passions, a club that allows students to host workshops on subjects they feel passionate about like robotics, mechanics and dance. Her ambition is simple: she wants to see her students’ faces light up with pride when they become aware of their personal potential and all the possibilities the world has to offer.

Gislain Mba Natadjom
