Magasin du monde

Students committed to promoting the values of solidarity and social justice through the sale of fair-trade products

For the fourth year in a row, students at école d'éducation internationale de Laval high school have fervently demonstrated that action taken locally can have a large-scale impact at the other side of the world thanks to their Magasin du monde project. Through the sale of fair-trade products, these young entrepreneurs promote the values of solidarity and social justice while optimizing their engagement by setting up awareness campaigns. In addition to acquiring administrative, marketing and management skills, the students strictly follow the principles of the redistribution of wealth. During the first three years they were open, they donated all their profits, which totalled over $3,000, to support international projects carried out by Oxfam-Québec and help a local organization to pursue its mission.

Atelier de réparation de vélos

Students committed to giving abandoned bicycles a second life and offering them to students from less fortunate families

Three years ago, when Jean-François Paquette, a teacher at Saint-Jean-Baptiste high school, noticed that a lot of students didn’t own a bike to get around, he decided to remedy the situation. To do so, he set up a bike repair shop with the help of a small group of young people with the goal of refurbishing abandoned bicycles and then giving them to students from less fortunate families. After finding just a few bikes here there and everywhere at the beginning, the crew started forging ties with public partners, which enabled them to get their hands on a greater number of bikes. Although they only managed to recondition and donate a few bikes the first year, Mr. Paquette and his team of young volunteers gave away 44 bicycles free of charge last year, thereby providing students with an active means of transport that helps them stay in shape.

Défi Pierre Lavoie

Students committed to improving their fitness and lifestyle through a rallying project

Running the 275 kilometres separating Montréal and Québec City, in one direction or the other, is a challenge students at Mgr-A.-M.-Parent high school have been taking up for the past six years. The project, which is part of the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie, provides support to the student participants through a carefully structured training program and offers an unparalleled group experience. As for the goal, to each his own: weight loss, fitness, healthy eating habits, desire for success, academic motivation or new friendships, anything goes. Rain or shine, the group of runners hit the streets surrounding the school in order to be in top shape when the big day finally arrives. And on the day in question, by taking it in turns, they will cover the entire distance in approximately 30 hours and each participant will have run the equivalent of a marathon. When all is said and done, they will each have attained their personal goal while realizing they all have something in common: perseverance.
