Boutique de Noël

Students committed to running a small thriving business

The Boutique de Noël sells very special and totally unique products, made by committed students who are proud of their designs. That’s because the project members create various objects using salvaged and recycled materials, turning them into Christmas decorations. Because there are virtually no shops of its kind in the Témiscouata region, the Boutique de Noël meets a real need in its community. When their boutique opened last November, it generated more than $3,000 in sales revenue, which was then reinvested in articles and activities for students. Praised for the quality of their workmanship, many members discovered unknown passions and hidden talents.

Murder Mystery

Students committed to using creativity to increase their perseverance at school

A group of 15 students in the special needs program set themselves quite a challenge: that of developing three murder mystery game prototypes and then submitting them to a Québec publishing company. Divided into three teams, the students chose a theme, wrote the synopsis, developed the characters and composed the dialogues. In order to put their creations to the test, they organized a murder mystery evening which attracted a great deal of interest at school! Although writing and teamwork are not easy tasks for these students, together they managed to meet the challenge. The 13 to 15 year olds are now more motivated than ever and have shown a brand new way of persevering at school.

La lecture pour Noël

Students committed to spreading the joys of reading

The La lecture pour Noël project was developed by a group of students on the solidarity committee at Roger-Comtois high school. The project members began by collecting used books, games, films and records and then selling them in their community. They managed to raise more than $1,800 and this sum was increased through funds collected thanks to the volunteer work of some of the students and a grant, bringing the total to over $6,000. This enabled them to purchase 473 new books which they subsequently handed out in person to students at two elementary schools in underprivileged neighbourhoods. Their goal? To share the joys of reading with toddlers, as a means of helping them to succeed at school.

Kenya project

Students committed to providing Kenya with drinking water

Élisabeth Bussières came back from a two-month trip to Nakuru, Kenya, with a desire to help, to make a difference. In Nakuru, residents are badly affected by water scarcity and every day, women have to walk dozens of kilometres just to bring back a small amount of water to their village. Determined to do something to help them, she mobilized a group of Secondary 1 girls around the Kenya project. The girls carry out fund-raising activities to purchase storage tanks for collecting rainwater. More than $2,000 has been raised up to now and one reservoir has already been installed in Nakuru, with two more on their way very soon

AVCdefg… La vie continue!

Students committed to supporting a friend while raising public awareness of stroke

In September 2016, students witnessed a tragic event: one of their classmates suffered a stroke. Deeply shaken, they decided to join forces to help their friend and his family. To do this, they organized a benefit evening to raise funds as well as make as many people as possible aware of stroke and its consequences. Held under the theme “AVCdefg… La vie continue!” (Stroke, life goes on!), the activity was organized from A to Z by students, who are all 14 and 15 years old, and featured a benefit dinner, conference and dance. And their activity, organized in partnership with the Fondation Élan, brought together an entire community.

DéJEUNErs

Students committed to getting their day off to a good start!

Every morning, from 7am to 9am, approximately thirty students head to the cafeteria at Vallée-des-Lacs high school. In a friendly spirit, these young people meet together and chat among themselves. On the menu: breakfast for all! At a school like this one, with a high deprivation level, providing students with a proper meal is important. The service is managed entirely by two Secondary 5 students who look after the management, registrations, accounting, food orders and the volunteer schedules. And in the mornings, it is the responsibility of ten other student volunteers to prepare the breakfasts and greet the participating students, bringing happiness to all.
