Marie-Claude Cormier

PERSEVERING STUDENT AVENIR

A student committed to overcoming her academic difficulties by staying focused

For Marie-Claude Cormier, perseverance is equivalent to never ceasing to forge ahead regardless of whether the road is a smooth or arduous one. And for her, the road has been far from smooth. Marie-Claude suffers from dyslexia and an attention deficit disorder and therefore has to work twice and even three times as hard to do well in school. But nothing will detract her from her goal of graduating from high school! Her target is crystal clear: to succeed, no matter what. And she draws her inspiration from her mother, who went back to school at the age of 30. Her secret to never giving up? A promise she made to her grandmother: that despite her difficulties at school, she would never drop out.

Magasin du monde

COMMITTED PROJECT AVENIR

Students committed to promoting the values of solidarity and social justice through the sale of fair-trade products

For the fourth year in a row, students at école d'éducation internationale de Laval high school have fervently demonstrated that action taken locally can have a large-scale impact at the other side of the world thanks to their Magasin du monde project. Through the sale of fair-trade products, these young entrepreneurs promote the values of solidarity and social justice while optimizing their engagement by setting up awareness campaigns. In addition to acquiring administrative, marketing and management skills, the students strictly follow the principles of the redistribution of wealth. During the first three years they were open, they donated all their profits, which totalled over $3,000, to support international projects carried out by Oxfam-Québec and help a local organization to pursue its mission.

Charles Gagnon

PERSEVERING STUDENT AVENIR

A student committed to overcoming his language disability by making continuous efforts

Communicating is a challenge for Charles Gagnon because he suffers from severe dysphasia, a language disorder that affects his ability to express himself. This student at XXX high school has to make continuous efforts in order to succeed: he works relentlessly, attends remedial classes and uses the homework assistance services. And his hard work paid off because when he began high school, Charles was assigned an education plan with modified expectations but in just one year he exceeded the expectations and rejoined the regular program. What’s more, he raised the bar for himself by enrolling in a program focusing on computer science which involves voice recording assignments. After successfully completing Secondary 4, the doors will be wide open for him to make his dreams a reality: to take a heavy equipment mechanics course, obtain his Class 1 driver’s licence, drive heavy vehicles and pursue training in tree felling and wood processing.

Charles Henrie

COMMITTED STUDENT AVENIR

A student committed to tapping into his creativity to offer his fellow students a stimulating school environment

Charles Henrie sees getting involved at school as a means of drawing on his originality and creativity in order to add a touch of colour to the daily lives of his fellow students. He does so, among other things, as a member of the student council at Mont-Bleu high school, helping to set up numerous projects such as the festivities surrounding various theme days, the Leucan Shaved Head Challenge and a multicultural week. Charles is also involved in the Brigade culinaire cooking team that allows him to develop his talents as a cook as well as providing an opportunity to take social action when preparing meals that are donated to community organizations. And because he is always ready and willing to give of his time, he can often be seen, a smile on his face, making posters or hanging up decorations as a way of lending a hand whenever he’s needed.
