Students committed to improving pedestrian safety in the area around their college

Following the death of a friend who was hit by a car while travelling on foot, three students at Cégep de Jonquière decided to take action. They began by organizing a march aimed at making motorists more aware of pedestrian safety. They also presented a petition to the City of Saguenay urging that concrete action be taken. These two activities led to the setting up of aworking committee on pedestrian safety. “The object of our actions is to denounce, raise awareness, propose and support elected officials in order to make our urban setting a safe environment,” explains one of the students Claudie Mac Donald. The benefits of their initiative are already being felt: the Jonquière district has reviewed all the parking entrances and exits and public works have repainted and widened the pedestrian crossings. “I realise now that our actions, which initially seemed to be only a drop in the ocean, have maybe had a ripple effect on the Saguenay region and I can only hope that one day they will have the impact of a national tidal wave.”

Students committed to sharing and broadcasting their local news

La Salle des Nouvelles is a new student newspaper at Cégep Garneau. The chief mandate of this online paper is to cover current events at the college, which had previously never benefitted from this type of platform. Founded in January 2015, the newspaper’s staff already includes an editor-in-chief, five editors, a secretary, a communications manager, a graphic designer and some ten journalists. In the first twenty days after it was launched, La Salle des Nouvelles published six articles on social media and succeeded in reaching a potential of 2,000 people! Today, several hundred readers visit the platform every day, a sure sign of the project’s relevance. Moreover, in order to offer quality content, the team at La Salle des Nouvelles acquired the Québec guide to journalistic ethics and has organized workshops with professional journalists. Thanks to this team of passionate students, there’s no reason for not being up to date on what’s going on at the college!

Students committed to “playing” to raise awareness of paediatric cancer

The La console qui console project was dreamed up by a group of students in special education technology at Cégep de Sherbrooke. And their goal was to make a significant difference in society while developing the skills required in event planning. After studying all the possible causes they could defend, they decided to help sick children and the project they developed to do so was an event that gave the Estrie community an opportunity to play board games and video games for 24 hours. Participants also got the chance to meet superheroes: children who, despite illness, thrive and show outstanding courage. It was therefore through games and laughter that they were able to raise awareness of paediatric cancer among more than 500 people! The students also used the project to successfully raise a total of $5,000, which they donated to Leucan Estrie.
